Privacy Policy
This policy explains what SpeedMeter collects when you use the speed test, what it does not collect, and the choices you have. It applies to https://www.speedmeter.website.
The short version
- Your speed test results are stored in your browser only. We do not upload or keep them.
- The test transfers random, meaningless data. It never reads files from your device.
- We show advertising from Google AdSense, which uses cookies. You can refuse them.
- We do not sell personal information.
What the speed test does
Measuring a connection means moving data across it. During a test your browser downloads a stream of randomly generated bytes from our server and uploads a similar stream back. That data is meaningless filler, generated fresh by the server. It is never written to disk, never inspected, and discarded the moment it arrives.
Your results — download speed, upload speed, ping and jitter — are calculated by the JavaScript running in your browser. The server never receives them.
Information we collect
Server logs
Like virtually every web server, ours processes the information your browser sends with each request: your IP address, the page requested, the time, your browser's user agent string and referring page. This is used to operate the service, diagnose faults and detect abuse such as automated hammering of the test endpoints.
Your IP address is also shown back to you on the results screen, because knowing which connection you tested is useful. It is displayed, not stored.
Stored in your browser
The site uses your browser's local storage — not cookies — for three things:
- Test history: your last ten results, so you can compare them over time.
- Theme preference: whether you chose light or dark.
- Consent choice: your answer to the cookie banner, so you are not asked repeatedly.
This data never leaves your device and is not readable by us. Clearing your browser's site data removes it. You can also clear your test history at any time with the Clear button under Recent tests.
What we do not collect
We do not ask for or store names, email addresses, accounts or payment details. There is nothing to sign up for.
Cookies and advertising
This site is supported by advertising. We use Google AdSense to serve ads.
- Google, as a third-party vendor, uses cookies to serve ads on this site.
- Google's use of advertising cookies enables it and its partners to serve ads to you based on your visit to this and other sites on the internet.
- Third-party vendors and ad networks may also use cookies to serve ads based on your prior visits.

Your consent choice
When you first visit, a banner asks whether you accept advertising cookies. Until you accept, we signal to Google that advertising storage and personalisation are denied, and you will see non-personalised ads instead. You can change your answer at any time using the Cookie settings link in the footer of any page.
If you are in the EEA, UK or Switzerland
Where the GDPR applies, our lawful bases are our legitimate interest in operating and securing the service (server logs) and your consent (advertising cookies). You have the right to access, correct, delete or port your personal data, to object to processing, and to withdraw consent at any time. You also have the right to complain to your national data protection authority.
Because we hold no accounts and store no results, the practical scope of a data request is limited to server logs, which are keyed only to IP address.
If you are in California
Under the CCPA/CPRA you have the right to know what personal information is collected, to request deletion, and to opt out of the "sale" or "sharing" of personal information. We do not sell personal information. Sharing for cross-context behavioural advertising is controlled by your consent choice described above, which you can withdraw at any time.
Children
This site is not directed at children under 13 and we do not knowingly collect personal information from them.
Data retention
Server logs are kept only as long as needed for operations and abuse prevention, and are then deleted. Browser-side data persists until you clear it.
Changes
If this policy changes materially, the date at the top will be updated. Continuing to use the site after a change means you accept the revised policy.
